The Great Pumpkin(s)

If an effort to be June Cleaver, I took my children to the pumpkin patch last week. It's a local farm that makes most of its money in the fall with pumpkins, gourds and general autumnal paraphernalia. I could've just bought the pumpkins for our jr. high party at the grocery store, but no. I wanted to create a memory. I created some pictures anyway. Beyond that there's no guarantee.

Of course there were quite a few Halloween decorations up, which I dislike intensely, but so far the kids don't really have any special interest in the whole process. They were intrigued by the mechanics more than anything. This snow-globe ghost had little black "bats" flying around inside a haunted house.

Luckily they were much more interested in the backyard. I loved this trampoline. The owners dug a hole and set the trampoline down where the jumping surface is at ground level. This way the kids can jump on and off with relative impunity. If we ever own a trampoline, this is how I'd want to do it, I think. You can see Mim there checking underneath. (She's looking for a cat, I think)

This will probably be our last pumpkin patch trip. As Mim and Zaya become more aware of the world around them, they'll start asking why we're going somewhere with big monster decorations and what a witch is and on and on. We face enough of that just walking through Wal-mart. Besides, I can buy the same pumpkins for half the price at the grocery store. Oh well. So much for nostalgia.

I love the pictures, especially the trampoline.I think that would be the way to set one up...I find it amusing that most of the family has the same opinion about halloween...JM and I just had a discussion on if this year we are going to continue our families great tradition of turning all the lights off on halloween and pretending that we aren't home!

We don't care for Halloween, either. This year our school district is giving the students the day off for Halloween. It irritated Donnie, but I think it is great! Now I don't have to pull my kids out for the day to avoid the celebration that they say they don't have. (they don't do halloween, but they let the kids dress up and do a sort of parade of costumes??? Yeah, I'm that dumb.)

Love the photos! The trampoline idea is a good one, I wish I'd thought of that way back when...
I know what you mean about Halloween, it's turned from a "passing fancy" to a "major event", it's very annoying.
We choose not to really acknowledge the day.

The first time I ever saw or jumped on a trampoline it was set up this way. We were visiting a family in Missouri and they had a four-year-old son who was blind. The trampoline was his. I thought for a long time that all trampolines were set up like this, and the ones in the air seemed strange to me.

"Autumnal paraphanelia" - I love that phrase, I'm going to have to find a way to use it!

Love the trampoline in the ground. They are so dangerous, this way takes some of the danger away. Those things scare me!

I wish there was a way (commercially) to celebrate fall without all the witches and goblins. I love fall. The colors, the smells, the cooler weather. Give me pumpkins and chrysantamums anyday!
