There's a brand new historical novel "Cottonwood Winter: A Christmas Story" by Gary Slaughter about life on the home front during WWII written from the perspective of some young boys who are trying to makes sense of the war in it's last year. I've used it to get my middle schooler engaged in the time period and the war. Just responding to the question about where somebody might start reading on the subject. Thanks for a great blog!Juliehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12046490680107521495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36846651.post-48319895444385571182007-12-14T00:33:00.000-08:002007-12-14T00:33:00.000-08:00RE: Book JacketsI usually remove them while I'm re...RE: Book Jackets

I usually remove them while I'm reading in order to keep the jackets pristine and crips, then replace them when I put the book back on the shelf. I've been told that this is entirely wrong and that the jackets are meant to be left on while you read in order to protect the book.

"They" are probably right, but BAH anyway!

I would recommend the WWII book Night by Elie Weisel. (not sure I spelled that correctly) It's a small book, but powerful.SunnyBrookhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01425264756311201661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36846651.post-11280985613207054642007-12-13T15:12:00.000-08:002007-12-13T15:12:00.000-08:00Wow. Hey, I happen to agree with A about the book covers. Hardly any of ours have covers either. I just find them in the way when I'm reading, and too many of them are bright, and shiny-they don't look uniform on my bookshelf. :)aftergracehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13249401281857342192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36846651.post-24750835438678860102007-12-13T08:53:00.000-08:002007-12-13T08:53:00.000-08:00This is fascinating. It's a topic I find very interesting, since I'm living in Germany, and my in-laws are all German. I get interesting stories from my MIL, who was a little girl during the war.Darlahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08346619210375248680noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36846651.post-15914155747553207262007-12-13T08:21:00.000-08:002007-12-13T08:21:00.000-08:00You have a lot of History up on them there shelves...You have a lot of History up on them there shelves~ I am not a big history buff...oh well! :) Thanks for stopping by!
I have another great contest up on my blog if you want to stop by to enter:
Sassyfrazz

Happy TT~Sassyfrazzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12707060900652371222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36846651.post-40878068384310388332007-12-13T06:21:00.000-08:002007-12-13T06:21:00.000-08:00wow what a history buff you must be.wow what a history buff you must be.♥.Trish.♥ Drumboyshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13482654455512269065noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36846651.post-85754430295161525572007-12-13T05:24:00.000-08:002007-12-13T05:24:00.000-08:00What a great list! Fascinating and necessarily long. I see your comment about it but remember that the Reich lasted 12 years, and fully half of those were before the war. This book was written in the early 1960s and I think has been superseded by some others but it's still worth a read. I'd also recommend John Toland's biography of Hitler.

The Churchill books are excellent.
